What It Means For Me To Be A Stay-At-Home Dad

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to my world of being a stay-at-home dad! I am the father of a beautiful and energetic six month old boy. He has brought much excitement and joy to both my wife and I with his daily discoveries of his ever-growing world.

So you must be wondering what exactly this blog will entail? Well, after our son was born, I mentioned to my wife that it might be an interesting idea to create a blog documenting my experiences of being a stay-at-home father. I did not know many dads who would take on this responsibility so I figured it would be an interesting adventure. And was I ever right about that! But every adventure has a beginning and this one was no different.

Why did we decide to do this? The decision started when my wife and I wanted to start a family. We both felt that to raise a family, it would be best to have a parent at home. I can honestly say, that even though we were used to the two incomes, it was not a hard decision. Luckily, we had been frugal with our money and saved much of our salaries so that helped. But ultimately, we would have made it work just based on the fact that one of us needed to be there to watch our son grow. There was no way anyone else was going to experience this besides us.

It came down to me being the one to stay at home for a couple of reasons. First, my wife had just received her masters degree and could make more income and provide us better benefits. Secondly, and more importantly for me, is that a majority of our society has this idea that if anyone is to stay at home for the kids, it has to be the mother. I always believed that more fathers should want, and be able to, raise their children at home. Now, there are many men out there that have become stay-at-home dads and have done a great job. And there are men who work full-time and are excellent fathers at home as well. I just feel that overall, as men, we need to step up our efforts in regards to raising our children. It does not mean that every man is built to be a stay-at-home dad nor does it mean that one parent has to be home raising the children. There are situations in which either is not feasible and that is perfectly fine. I just hope this blog motivates more men to be better fathers and for the ones already doing so that it is up to us to lead by example. To show that it should not be unusual for dads and that we can do a great job. And to share in the joy of one of life’s amazing journeys.

So, I hope you also decide to share in my journey of raising my baby boy. Along the way you will laugh at some of the experiences, maybe cry at others. But ultimately, I hope to inspire everyone to seeing the best part of being a parent is just being there for our children.

Speaking of inspiration, I wanted to thank my wife, who is an amazing partner and mother. She is the one who created this blog for my first father’s day gift and has given me the support as my other half in raising our child. I love you.
